UFC 74: Respect is this weekend
Me: You are a lucky scab to be going to the UFC. There's an event on this weekend, (it feels like forever since the last one), I haven't even looked to see what the card is yet.
Mark:
Date: Aug. 25, 2007
Location: Las Vegas
Venue: Mandalay Bay Events Center
Broadcast: Pay-Per-View
MAIN CARD
Champion Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga (for heavyweight title)
Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck
Patrick Cote vs. Kendall Grove
Joe Stevenson vs. Kurt Pellegrino
Alberto Crane vs. Roger Huerta
UNDERCARD
David Heath vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral
Antoni Hardonk vs. Frank Mir
Marcus Aurelio vs. Clay Guida
Ryan Jensen vs. Thales Leites
Me: I don't want to see Gonzaga hurt Randy. Randy's a tough (old) guy, but Gonzaga blew me away when he beat Cro Cop.
GSP is a fave. I hope he beats Koscheck for Canadian pride. Koscheck is no tomato can.
Cote vs. Grove - I like both these fighters and want Cote to win (another Canadian!) but Grove has been really impressive since the Ultimate Fighter.
Stevenson vs. Pellegrino - I don't know this Pellegrino guy. Hope for a good match.
Crane vs. Huerta - Is this Crane's debut? Huerta (if memory serves) is a tough dude.
I certainly can't comment on the undercard.
Mark:
Gonzaga was definitely impressive against Cro Cop, but I think it'll be a different story against Couture. It's going to depend on if Randy can get him in the clinch and then turn it into a wrestling match - few can live with Couture's skills on the ground. Tough to call.
There's no doubt that GSP is quality, but he's also inconsistent - sometimes he just doesn't look switched on to me. I think he'll win this though because I imagine he's hurting a bit from the defeat to Matt Serra. Koscheck is good, but he likes to slow the pace of the fight down and it'll be difficult to do that with GSP's speed.
The other 3 main card fights look like great match-ups and are really hard to pick - fingers crossed they are just some exciting fights.
As for the undercard, David Heath was quite highly touted but fought (and lost) possibly the most boring fight I've ever seen at UFC 70, whereas Babalu used to be one of the most dangerous fighters around, but seems to have stagnated whilst others have continued to develop. I think Heath might win this to get his career back on track.
I don't know Hardonk, but Frank Mir is supposed to be in the best shape he's been in since he came back from his big motorcycle accident a few years ago. That's nt saying much though, he used to be a top heavyweight contender, but since his accident he's been overweight, slow and sluggish.
I've heard of the remaining fighters but don't know enough to make any sensible predictions.
Should be a good night!
